Dispatch from Tel Aviv
As some of you know, I'm currently on vacation in Israel. I'm not going anywhere near the Gaza Strip, so unless the current conflict escalates, I'm not in danger. (While I think it's likely that it will escalate, any estimates on how or when are beyond me at the moment.)

Besides the television and newspapers, I haven't seen much in Tel Aviv indicating the heightened level of security. On the road back from the Galilee yesterday, however, the impact of the activities in Gaza were evident. Traffic near the Arab village of Um el Fahm was slowed to a crawl, with a very heavy police presence; we found out later that there had been rocks thrown at police by Arab protesters earlier in the day. And earlier, near Megiddo Junction, we passed several trucks carrying tanks and armored bulldozers. While it's impossible to say for certain, it's not unreasonable to think that these units are headed towards Gaza.

At any rate, I'm off to Eilat and the southern Negev desert, and will likely be offline for a few days. Hopefully things won't get too much worse in the Middle East, for everybody's sake.

Your vote has been cast....
I just got back from voting in the Democratic Primary for state issues -- a couple ballot measures, my Congressional candidate, stuff like that. It's funny to see how turnout drops in between elections. Turnout was quite high (I had to wait in a line) in February. Today, I was the first person at my polling place.

An update? In THIS LJ? It's more likely than you think.
So I haven't updated in a while. Meh. For those wondering, no, I didn't fall into an emo tailspin and vaporize. Instead, here's what happened:

The JR-97/120 in room draw was recoverable, and Betrayal ended up, somehow, pulling a Linde suite, with [info]divinewolfwood and I in the long double. The suite worked out awesomely, with two very well-placed frosh. This year, despite some drama regarding in-dorm statuses, we managed to pull the Atwood suite we've been going for since summer math; that should be fun.

I managed to snap out of my depressed mood by the fall, doing decently academically (although not great), but then regained my usual powers of academics spring semester, finishing with over a 3.0 GPA for the first time since first semester. Lowest grade was a C- in Stems, but hey -- it's easier the second time. I'm on pace to graduate on-time with exactly 128 units. ^_^

I've been actually updating the Goobergunch Political Report since December, providing a more up-to-date delegate tally than most of the major networks. Also, as somebody that's known about delegate rules since 2004, I laugh at everybody that's learning about superdelegates for the first time.

There's probably more I should say here, but honestly, I'm not up for a giant introspective megapost. However, I just wanted to make sure that nobody thought I had disappeared or anything. My last couple posts are pretty depressed, and, well, I was quite depressed when I posted them. But that's a long way from where I am now.

Oh, and in the glorious tradition of some of my older posts:

[18:49 update]: Oh, and a prefrosh I was showing around campus today expressed an interest in computer games at HMC, so I told him about Crack in the AC and how to sign up for gaming-l. Does that make me a bad person? (According to Dean Noda, it does.)

I'll have an actual update when I'm not recuperating from a horrific E&M midterm, as I'm aware I'm well overdue. Expect it in he next couple days or so.

Return to Claremont
Change, my dear, and not a moment too soon. --The Sixth Doctor

It turns out that August wasn't as horrible as I was predicting. This is due, for the most part, to the following:

  1. The Glacier National Park trip, which culminated in a 12-mile (round trip mileage) hike to Grinnell Glacier. It was quite enjoyable, if tiring.

  2. World of Warcraft, which I played for most of the time I was awake and at home. I'm up to level 48, and I should hit 49 shortly after this gryphon gets to Tanaris.

But now I'm back at Mudd, and, at 8 AM tomorrow (I'm staying at a hotel tonight), will be moving into Case Q2C, Suite Betrayal. I'm looking forward to seeing everybody again, but not the homework that the return will entail. Meh.

There was a sign on I-15 for a Potato Expo. Also, the Snake's on a plain.

The Laguna Hills - St. George Road
Thanks to my grandmother, I managed to lose nearly two hours of sleep that I was counting on before setting off today. That wasn't a good thing. At any rate, I-15 from southern California to southern Utah isn't particularly exciting, although it is particularly fast; I was doing about 80 MPH for most of it, although Las Vegas is quite slow (given that I-15 runs right next to the Strip) and the general Vegas area is rather windy. The scenery got a bit more interesting in the Arizona/Utah part of the run, and I was also entirely too amused that the last AZ exit was "Black Rock Road". At any rate, St. Georges is a nice enough spot, although you can definitely tell that you're in Utah. Meh, tomorrow I'll be driving on an actually decent amount of sleep....

Vacation, finally
Tomorrow I'll be leaving for a road trip to Glacier National Park, and will be back in California next Friday (the 18th). I will, however, still be on the Internet, so don't think I'm actually going away in any sense of the term that actually matters, unless you're one of all zero of the people that read this and live in Orange County.

Need Control
So apparently Dell laptop keyboard components are very hard to pop back in when they come up. So if, say, your left control key (needed for opening new Firefox tabs, switching between FF tabs, cut, copy, paste, and WoW pet control) gets dislodged, it's hard to get it back working again. Fun....

Seven Months in a Zone....
So I haven't updated in a while. There are a lot of things buzzing around in my head, but I haven't been able to organize my thoughts enough to write coherently about them. Instead, here are some nice shiny bullet points!

  • As of Friday night, I've moved off-campus for the balance summer and am now at "home". I think my stomach is going to explode from the sudden influx of food. I'm not bored out of my mind yet, but that's likely to start in the not-ultra-distant future. However....

  • I've been playing quite a lot of WoW, being now at level 36. It's a fun and quite addicting game, what can I say. And it'll help keep me sane over the next four weeks, which is also a good thing.

  • My mom and I went to the Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young concert today. It was highly enjoyable. I do worry that people think that just going to a concert will make a political difference, but if it encourages people to actually go out and do something, then that's a good thing.

  • I'm still getting paid by the Math Department to make the HMC Calculus Tutorials in an actually decent format, which I'll be doing to some extent over the next week and possibly during the fall semester. This may also mean I have a job for next semester. Yay!

  • If you're in Orange County, you're highly encouraged to randomly stop by my house. It's the kind of thing that amuses me. I also need to move stuff out of my car so I can start actually using it to go places again.

  • I've recently realized that I haven't been out of Southern California since January, which is the longest I've been in one "zone" of the U.S. for about as long as I can remember. I need to find a random excuse to drive across the Tehachapi Mountains, Colorado River, or similar.

Until next time....

Settlers of Sontag
One of the reasons I love Harvey Mudd so much is that the professors are approachable and you can see them as people, not as distant God-like beings. For instance, tonight Professor Martonosi, who's the new Professor-in-Residence at Mudd, threw an ice cream sundae event in her apartment (which ended up moving to the Sontag lounge for size reasons). Afterwards, Adam, Prof. Martonosi, and myself played Settlers of Catan for a bit. It was rather awesome.

Summer Proctor System
Today I've come to the conclusion that Mudd needs to fix its summer proctor system. I managed to lock myself out of my room today (a day I was planning on spending wholly in either my room or the AC lab, but I needed to return a book to Honnold), and discovered the following:
  • The number given for lock-outs doesn't work on weekends, because it goes to Crystal Whinery at Facilities and Maintenance.
  • David the Summer Housing Manager isn't responding to either his doorbell or his campus phone.
  • Proctor Hadley isn't around, but she'll be back tomorrow.
  • Proctor Jason isn't responding to either his door or his campus phone.
  • Sontag rooms are rather difficult to break into.

I would have thought there'd be a requirement (like there is during the school year) that there is always an accessible proctor-type person on-campus. But apparently there isn't, and the only way for me to immediately get back into my room is to pay $22 to Campus Safety. Since this is kind of exorbitant, I'm just going to wait a bit and then try to find proctors again. I'll....be here, on the Natural Selection server "Crack in the AC".

And if anybody knows how to break into a Sontag double, please IM me.
